  • ( ) NZ credit card billings rise 0.3 pct in December

    WELLINGTON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Growth in credit card billings in New Zealand eased in December, central bank data showed on Thursday, reinforcing the view that consumer spending is gradually easing.

    The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said total billings rose a seasonally adjusted 0.3 percent last month, following a rise of 1.2 percent in November.

    Billings were up a seasonally adjusted 7.6 percent on a year ago compared with a 9.5 percent gain in the November year.

    The data backs up a recent run of figures pointing to a softening in consumer demand. Electronic retail card spending was flat in December, and although retail sales rose 2 percent in November analysts said the underlying trend was downward.

    The strength of domestic activity has been a key factor in the RBNZ raising interest rates by 100 basis points last year to a record 8.25 percent. More>>
